BPI Dental — the Birmingham Periodontal and Implant Centre — has worked in Harborne since 1997 as a dedicated referral practice, setting it apart from the rest of the city’s ten. More than seven hundred general dentists pass patients over when gum disease, a failing implant or an awkward root canal moves past what a high-street surgery can manage. It is private throughout: the practice states plainly that it does not provide NHS treatment.

Treatments

Periodontics is the backbone — non-surgical management of gum disease, regenerative and microsurgical gum surgery, treatment of receding gums, gum contouring. Implantology runs from a single tooth to All-on-4 fixed arches, with bone grafting, sinus work and zygomatic implants anchored in the cheekbone for jaws too resorbed for conventional grafting. Failing implants placed elsewhere are handled as peri-implantitis cases. Endodontics has dedicated facilities; oral surgery, biopsies, Invisalign, composite bonding and whitening complete the list.

Technology

The equipment reads more like a hospital department than a practice: a Carestream CS 9600 cone-beam scanner whose face-scanning software lays a realistic 3D photograph over the scan, X-Guide navigation from Nobel Biocare tracking drill position live during implant surgery, 3Shape TRIOS scanners in place of impression trays, ZEISS EXTARO 300 microscopes, Biolase Waterlase and Epic lasers, and Florida Probe periodontal charting in use since 2002.

The specialists

Founder Boota Singh Ubhi is a GDC-registered specialist periodontist and implant surgeon with over four thousand implants behind him. Praveen Sharma, an Associate Professor who also holds a consultant post in restorative dentistry at Birmingham Dental Hospital, takes complex restorative referrals; Prav Praveen is a consultant oral and maxillofacial surgeon dual-qualified in medicine and dentistry; Monica Campos specialises in mucogingival surgery; Wasim Idoo is sedation-qualified. The same team teaches postgraduate courses to colleagues.

Who it suits

Anyone told their case is too complex for a general practice; patients losing teeth to periodontal disease; people whose implants or dentures have failed. Nervous patients are offered intravenous sedation with midazolam and The Wand, a computer-guided system that numbs a single tooth without numbing the lip.
